NOTES ON LUMINAIRE FLUORESCENT LAMPS (AND PARTLY, HID LAMPS) ELECTRONIC CONTROL GEAR: -

ENHANCED QUALITY OF LIGHT: -

Electronic ballasts, like wound chokes, are current limiting devices. The use of electronics allows more sophisticated control and enhanced quality of light, additional features that would not be possible with wound chokes.  Electronic ballasts run fluorescent lamps at high frequency (40 – 100 kHz) which ensures the lamp current is virtually constant, unlike wound chokes where the lamp current is interrupted 100 times a second at 50 Hz. This obviously gives greater visual comfort and ‘cathode flicker’ is eliminated, even at low temperatures.

In addition the dangerous stroboscopic effect associated with rotating machinery is eliminated. At start up there is no annoying flicker or noise and, if a lamp is defective, it will be shut down automatically without causing any further and annoying disturbances.

 ENERGY SAVINGS: -

High frequency operation permits more energy to be converted into light. Between 7 and 11 % less power is required for the same light output, which would be achieved, using an equivalent conventional wound choke.

Electronic Ballasts are much more efficient than wound chokes and, therefore, run cooler not only reducing losses but lowering the temperature in the Luminaire, and surroundings. This also allows for less loading of air conditioning systems. The lamp is allowed to run nearer its optimum operating temperature of 25 °C.  The total savings are dependent on the individual lamp, but wound chokes use 30 % more energy than the equivalent electronic ballast.

INCREASED LAMP LIFE: -

Because the lamp is run under exactly the right conditions and a soft (warm) start is used, practical experience has shown that lamp life increases from approximately 8000 hours to 12000 hours.

Exact control of lamp power, independent of fluctuations on mains voltages. Light output will remain constant between mains voltages of 198 – 264 V, or on the 110V versions between 85 – 155 V.

Warm starting of lamps within 0.95 seconds.

Wide operating temperature range, - 15°C to + 70°C.

SERVICE LIFE: -

Electronic ballasts have a designed mean service life of 50,000 hours at a maximum ambient temperature of 70°C. This is achieved by using only the highest quality components and by conducting rigorous testing programmes.

QUALITY ASSURANCE: -

To maintain the reputation electronic ballasts have earned, 100 % of production has a multistage testing programme, including a thermal function testing programme.

DIMMING LIGHTING CONTROL SYSTEMS: -

COMPONENTS FOR LIGHTING SOLUTIONS: -

Dimming makes it possible to produce a wide variety of Creative Lighting Solutions. With fully Electronic Digital Control Gear such as Dimmers, Electronic Ballasts and Electronic Transformers, a wide range of Lamps can be dimmed. By means of Precise Digital Control Devices, Control Units and Sensors, individual and unique installations can be created. From simple control with Rotary Potentiometers and Push to Make Switches, to the more complex Controls, using Building Management Systems, such as EIB and AV Touch Panels.

PERFECT LIGHT QUALITY: -

People receive about 80 % of all information via their eyes. Light gives us sight.

Therefore the better the light is suited to a particular situation, the more precisely information can be gathered, the feeling and mood absorbed. With Dimming Systems, different light sources can be Dimmed Digitally and therefore exactly. Dimming satisfies the requirements of optimal lighting level and adjusts for individual lighting needs. Dimmers, Dimming Systems, Electronic Ballasts and Electronic Transformers utilize logarithmic dimming curves, that are set according to the requirements of the human eye.

The human eye is very sensitive in the range of 0 to 10 %, where irregular or sudden changes are uncomfortable. The unique concept of utilizing the logarithmic curve, provides a comfortable change between 0 and 100 %. Together with the Precise Control provided, the Dimmers, Dimming Systems, Electronic Dimmable Ballasts and Electronic Transformers, have the Technological means to provide perfect lighting quality.

ENERGY SAVINGS: -

With Dimming Systems, energy savings of up to 70 % are possible. Such high savings come from both the economical operation of the lamp, and from linking of electronic Dimmable Ballasts and Electronic Transformers to Daylight Sensors and Presence Detectors.

Through the use of high grade components, Dimmer Modules, and the associated Controllers have a mean service life of 200,000 hours within the permissible temperature range, and a MTBF value of 400,000 hours. In addition, Lamp life will be positively influenced by the use of Dimming Systems. Experience has shown that lamp life increases from approximately 8000 hours to 15000 hours when compared to Conventional Control Gear.

Long term tests show that through the use of optimized warm starting of the Lamp (pre-heating of the cathodes) the switching frequency of the Lamp can be increased dramatically, when compared with cold start. The exact control of brightness and power means that operation in the Dimmed Mode has a positive influence on Lamp life. The Dimming Systems and Associated Modules have comprehensive built in safety features.
